Specifically, the work gets its inspiration from imagery that defines what it means to be a young boy growing up in mainstream America. Open to artists residing in Indiana, Illinois, Michigan, Minnesota, Kentucky, Ohio and Wisconsin, this exhibition is an up-to-date dialogue of art happening in our own backyard. From over 200 submitting artists, only 14 were selected by juror William Lieberman, owner/director of Zolla/Lieberman Gallery, Chicago, IL . The pool of exhibiting artists is deliberately limited to allow for the showing of a greater body of work by each artist. In other words – “I’ll have some of what Feeley is having”. His work is so original and out-there that you often feel that you have stumbled into another dimension. Feeley gets some of his inspiration from the so-called “Chaos Theory” which supports the insistent power of change over convention. He takes license to reorder and re-contextualize the world of images to present not the accepted logical arrangement, but rather an aesthetically provocative re-arrangement. Feeley’s sources are endless: generally familiar images, signs and symbols of contemporary culture, art history and literature, myth and legend, and even doodles. In other words, whatever he can draw on to throw open the gates of our perception.<br /><br />IN THE LAB: Dominic Paul Moore You’re Gonna Love it Here Drawings<br /><br />Dominic Paul Moore’s newest body of work, titled You’re Gonna Love it Here, features gouache and graphite photo-realistic drawings. These attention-grabbing colors, created from unmixed sign paint, draw the viewer to concise yet open-ended, multilingual thoughts about society. Zora Neale Hurston’s observation, “All my skin folk ain’t all my kin folk,” and the artist’s own mantra, “We all we got,” are written in Korean, Urdu, German, French, Spanish, Polish, and Bosnian on these humble posters. In the engravings displayed nearby, the two quotes reappear alongside further social commentary and unknown names tangled within baroque patterning. Where the signs are bright, outgoing, spontaneous, and fragile, the intricate engravings on tar-colored sign substrate are dark, inward, laborious, and relatively permanent. While the signs evoke grassroots advertising, the engravings evoke dangerous and secret forms of expression, such as scratchings on trains and buses, in bathroom stalls, or on desks at the back of a classroom. Executed during his residency at the Museum of Contemporary Art, Chicago (January 15–February 24, 2008), these text-based works draw on familiar modes of communication encountered at stores or on the street in order to capture contemporary voices.<br /><br />To better record language that is alive, Genovese created this set of signs and engravings in collaboration with visitors and staff at the MCA. Avoiding static dictionary definitions, he enlisted native speakers at the museum to translate the phrases he ultimately painted on neon posters. Likewise, the intricate engravings produced during this residency were built up from messages carved by museum goers. Because of his insistence on a human element in his work, Genovese’s interaction with everyday life as art has a sincerity that is lacking in the innovative contributions of Marcel Duchamp and Pop Art to this terrain. While Duchamp appropriated ordinary objects, Genovese, informed by his prior career as a specialty sign painter and sign contractor, creates his pieces with his own hands. While Pop artists tended to aestheticize the vernacular, Genovese’s work is grounded more in a collaborative process than in an aesthetic. Genovese effectively resurrects Josef Beuys’ conception of “social sculpture”—whereby social interaction is a work of art and every person is an artist—without the utopian promise Beuys championed. Though his works often involve painting, then, it is clear that Genovese’s medium is not strictly paint, nor is it simply industrial sign materials; he also works with the abstract media of language and human interaction. <br /><br />Antonia Pocock 2008 <br /><br />In The Lab: Casey Riordan Millard "I’m Sorry I Can’t Save You " Watercolors and Sculpture <br /><br /><br />Currently Riordan Millard’s work consists of sculptures, drawings, and paintings of girls who have the heads of Great White Sharks. She calls them, simply, “Shark Girls.” The life-sized sculptures are constructed from steel armatures and then covered in wax, fabric, polymer clay, paint, and ceramic. The smaller sculptures are built primarily of porcelain and are painted with oils. She paints with watercolor and gouache on watercolor paper and often uses the paintings as studies for her sculptures. <br /><br />With the Shark Girls, Riordan Millard examines the search for solace from the heartbreak of mortality. While we may find temporary distractions in nature, the routine of everyday living and the trappings of Western culture, these distractions are only external. A deeper relief from the human condition must come from within if we wish to ease our fears about our impermanence. <br /><br />The predicament of the Shark Girl is that she never faces her inner turmoil and, instead, continues the outward quest for diversion. She looked at me, smiled softly and said, "Not for a very long time my dear!" This question has never subsided. This commonality we all share, and it's in this, that these images hold their weight. I feel that even though we struggle with the inundation of ideas and multi mediafication of mind numbing entertainment, this question still finds its way to the surface. In light of <a href="http://www.niu.edu/memorial/">recent events here at NIU</a>, the concept of foraging on is plastered all throughout the community. He wasnt home. I Explained it to him and we laughed.... The next night drawing on her profile a similar thing occured, but this time Tom was sleeping upstairs, and nothing was on to make noise, no radio or T.V.  just as i started to put the pencil to my yupo paper, the same sound emerged from up the stairs with a load smashing thud of the door. i ran up just as Tom was running down. it woke him, it wasnt him. He with dazed eyes expressed his concern, <span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-style: italic;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-weight: bold;">"was that you?"</span></span> and I with a sudden lump throat, <span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-style: italic;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-weight: bold;">"NO!!!" </span></span>On the third night the very same thing happened just as i began to draw on the profile of a girl that recently died.  </div><div><br /></div><div>Was this her ghost?  maybe... cause as i remember back, and looking through my idea journal to find the entry about my idea for drawing web sites, I found it corresponds with the very week of her death. I know this is strange, but,  i really dont know how to expplain it.  It did happen just as described. Is this going to make the work have a greater weight?, maybe?! but this is fun regardless of the truth or matter in the story. It <span class="blsp-spelling-corrected" id="SPELLING_ERROR_2">wasn't</span> until <span class="blsp-spelling-corrected" id="SPELLING_ERROR_3">November</span> that this idea came up again while i was listening to <span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-weight: bold;">NPR</span>. Wait Don't Tell Me show...  They were discussing and interviewing the brain child of the <span class="blsp-spelling-corrected" id="SPELLING_ERROR_4">controversial</span> web site <span class="blsp-spelling-error" id="SPELLING_ERROR_5"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-weight: bold;"><a href="http://www.mydeathspace.com/"><span class="blsp-spelling-error" id="SPELLING_ERROR_0">Mydeathspace</span></a></span></span>, also go <a href="http://actionagainstmydeathspace.tk/">here </a>for the full <span class="blsp-spelling-corrected" id="SPELLING_ERROR_1">spectrum</span>.  Although in this site (mydeathspace) a family or friend could upload the URL of a <span class="blsp-spelling-corrected" id="SPELLING_ERROR_7">deceased</span> user. In doing so they were cataloging the seemingly tragic deaths of the young.  The creator claims he hosts some 3500 deaths, most do to car accicidents.  <span class="blsp-spelling-corrected" id="SPELLING_ERROR_8">Intrigued</span> i went to this site and stumbled across this girl <span class="blsp-spelling-error" id="SPELLING_ERROR_9"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-style: italic;"><span class="blsp-spelling-error" id="SPELLING_ERROR_3">Mandii</span></span></span><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-style: italic;"> </span>(with Two <span class="blsp-spelling-error" id="SPELLING_ERROR_10"><span class="blsp-spelling-error" id="SPELLING_ERROR_4">i's</span></span>). Her page stood out to me.  She was an <span class="blsp-spelling-corrected" id="SPELLING_ERROR_11">attractive</span> young girl about 20 years old from the suburbs of Chicago.  Apparently she died of drinking &amp; driving(she was driving).  The story began to grow in my mind, I began to read up on her life via the uploads of self indulgence to her <span class="blsp-spelling-error" id="SPELLING_ERROR_12"><span class="blsp-spelling-error" id="SPELLING_ERROR_5">myspace</span></span> profile.  Therein she littered her page with coded comments and borrowed phrases like <span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-weight: bold;">"</span><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-style: italic;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-weight: bold;">don't worry about the people of your past..there's a reason they don't make it to your future.</span></span><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-weight: bold;">" </span>WOW... this smacked me <span class="blsp-spelling-corrected" id="SPELLING_ERROR_13">across</span> the head. i <span class="blsp-spelling-corrected" id="SPELLING_ERROR_14">needed</span> to draw this.  As i read further it became more and more special. Last time i was home, i came across a box of old Boy's Life mags from <span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-style: italic;">1985-88</span> and in a few there were oddities that i read as humorous and strangely interesting reads on socialization of American boys. This show is up though march29.
